EV Chargepoint Grant: Who Qualifies and How Much

The EV chargepoint grant is the OZEV grant for a charger at home in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland: 75% of the cost, up to £500, for flats, rented homes, on-street parking and landlords, until 31 March 2027.

Own a house with a driveway? There is no grant for you. The Homecharge Scheme that covered these homes stopped taking new applicants on 31 March 2022. The grant that took its place serves flats, rented homes and on-street parking only (GOV.UK).

Who Qualifies for the EV Chargepoint Grant?

Four kinds of home qualify for money off a chargepoint. The home left out is one you own with a driveway of its own.

Your homeGrantThe main rule
A flat you own and live in75%, up to £500One socket, placed on a private, off-street parking space that is legally yours
Any home you rent75%, up to £500One socket, on your own private off-street space, once your landlord agrees
A home with on-street parking75%, up to £500A permanent cross-pavement channel, approved by your highways authority
Homes you let or manage75%, up to £500 a socketUp to 200 sockets yearly, open to landlords and management companies

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all covered by the grants.

Flats and the EV Charger Grant

Live in a flat you own? The grant pays 75% of one chargepoint socket's cost, up to £500. It must be a private space off the street that you have the legal right to use.

Before work begins, most blocks require approval from the freeholder or managing agent. The application asks for it, so get that permission in writing before you apply.

Renters: the OZEV Grant

Any kind of rented home qualifies for the same 75%, up to £500. Shared ownership counts too. Your landlord must agree, and you must have your own private off-street space to park.

Whoever keeps the electric car is the one the grant is for. A second-hand car counts, a new one does, and so does a car you have on order.

Cross-Pavement Channels and On-Street Parking

Homes with only on-street parking have been able to claim 75%, up to £500, since 18 March 2024. A cross-pavement channel is the catch: a permanent groove running the cable under the pavement to your car.

Before you apply, your local highways authority must approve the channel. Mats or cable covers that sit on the pavement surface are not accepted.

Landlords: the OZEV Grant

Social housing providers, residential landlords, freeholders and management companies can each claim 75% of a socket's cost, up to £500. The yearly limit is 200 sockets each, spread over all their homes.

Shared car parks are covered by the grant as well. Chargepoints that a planning condition already required are not paid for.

If Your House Has a Driveway

No grant goes to a house you own and live in that has its own driveway. These homes had the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, which stopped taking new applicants on 31 March 2022.

The cost is all that is left for you. See the price and what you pay each year to charge at home in our cost calculator.

Is There an EV Charger Rebate in the UK?

No rebate applies here. The grant comes off your bill before payment in the UK: the installer deducts it, then claims it from OZEV. Later on, no money is handed back to you.

The Way the Claim Works

  1. Request a quote

Get a quote from an OZEV-authorised installer, and ask a landlord or freeholder for any permission required.

  2. You apply for eligibility

You, not the installer, ask OZEV to confirm you qualify, on GOV.UK, with the quote and a utility bill under 3 months old, plus your tenancy agreement if you rent. OZEV then emails you both.

  3. The installer fits and claims

Only after OZEV says yes does the installer fit the charger. They take the grant off your invoice, so you pay what is left, and then claim it from OZEV.

For the steps, see how to apply on GOV.UK.

Get installer quotes

An OZEV-authorised installer gives you the quote you need for the grant, takes the grant off the bill and claims it after fitting.

Independent site, not run by OZEV or the government. Sending this is not a grant application, and no work should be booked until OZEV confirms you are eligible.

OZEV EV Chargepoint Grant Questions

If my car is second-hand, can I still get the grant?

Yes. Both new and second-hand electric cars count, as long as the registered keeper is you.

Can I install the chargepoint myself?

No. A grant-funded chargepoint can only be fitted, and the grant claimed, by an OZEV-authorised installer.

How many chargepoints are available to me?

Flat owners and renters get one socket per home. Up to 200 sockets a year can be claimed by landlords.
